Two types of screen printed adhesive – Lick n Stick or Self-Seal – for sealing envelopes, reply cards and questionnaires. These gums can be applied in any shape or pattern required, all we need is a marked-up sheet or a mock-up, but we can also work from a pdf file as with Spot UV Varnish.
Remoist Gum
Often referred to simply as Strip Gum or Lick n Stick, this gum, as the name suggests, is activated by moistening and is ideal for reply cards etc. containing sensitive information as once it is sealed it cannot be opened except by tearing the paper.
It is advisable not to apply sealer coats in the areas where remoist gum is required to be applied (and the facing page it will stick to), because even though the gum will stick well to most sealed surfaces, the bond is not as instantaneous.
Latex Gum
Latex gum is a Self-seal pressure-sensitive adhesive which is applied to two faces of print which then press together to form a bond. This is much more convenient than remoistening gum (as above) however the bond is not as strong as the bond achieved with Remoist Gum.
It is critical to plan the job carefully as it is only possible to apply this gum to one side of the sheet.
Tips to Get the Best Gummed Job
All the same tips apply as for Spot UV Varnishing (see relevant page) except that uncoated papers are fine for gumming.
